Just a stone’s throw from the University of Georgia, First Presbyterian Church has a unique and exciting opportunity to offer hospitality and spiritual formation to students and young adults in Athens. While we have students from several local colleges and universities who are a part of our church programs, our primary ministry to students is through our partnership with the Presbyterian Student Center at the University of Georgia. First Presbyterian Church has provided support for this ministry since it was first established as a PC(USA) campus ministry in 1940, even hosting its offices during early construction of its physical space. Today, First Presbyterian Church members often volunteer their time to cook Sunday night dinners for at the PSC and provide financial support for this campus ministry each year, and the Presbyterian Student Center is a frequent partner in our mission and outreach in the community, such as on our Habitat for Humanity Build and for our annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
We are also fortunate to be the internship site for three Waddel Fellows, undergraduate students and recently graduated students in the Athens area who are exploring calling and vocation to Christian ministry by serving in local congregations. For the 2015-2016 academic year, Alyssa Standard is the Waddel Fellow for Youth Ministry, Elizabeth Wilkes is the Waddel Fellow for Outreach, and Stacey Bowden is the Waddel Fellow for Children’s Ministries. We are so glad to have them blessing our church with their many gifts and graces.
