Responsibilities of Commissions of the Session

Administrative Commission (Encompassing the ministry of Personnel, Property and Finance plus Nominating and Endowment):

Mission Statement: to manage the resources God has entrusted to us, to maintain our assets with care, our personnel with love and nurture and to manage finances prudently and effectively.

  • Regular review of annual budget
  • Approve all church budgets: Weekday School, annual Church Budget, P & R, etc.
  • Communication responsibility to congregation on finances
  • Develop annual budget
  • Annual review of church staff
  • Review/create job descriptions
  • Annually review staff compensation
  • Hiring or recommend hiring of program and support staff
  • Review of Personnel Manual
  • Maintain property and facilities manual
  • Review safety codes
  • Maintain or recommend replacement of church vehicles
  • Review, maintain and recommend for renewal church insurance policy
  • Recommend facilities update, repairs when necessary and needed
  • Grounds maintenance, care and design
  • Technology updates of hard and soft ware, repair and maintain current equipment
  • Decorations and design

Worship and Music Commission (Encompassing the ministry of Worship and Music):

Mission Statement: Rejoice in Worship

  • All Choirs—children’s (2), Celebration Singers, Chancel Choir and Mellows
  • Organize Ushers for each service and special services (Funeral/Memorial, Ash Wed. / Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, etc.)
  • Sacraments—schedule of frequency, schedule of times; servers, preparation, elements and trays
  • Sound System in sanctuary—operator
  • Weddings
  • Funerals /Memorial Services
  • Acolytes
  • Classes for communion preparation for children
  • Prepare families for Baptism of infants and young children
  • Recommendation of hymnbooks, Bible, songbooks for sanctuary and worship
  • Flower Committee

Education and Discipleship Commission (Encompassing the ministry of Education and Stewardship):

Mission Statement: To make disciples who rejoice in, seek, and share the love of Christ.

  • Church nursery

  • Youth Fellowship (evening groups)
  • Wednesday@First–planning classes and schedule

Mission and Outreach Commission (Encompassing the ministry of Communication, Outreach and Weekday School):

Mission Statement: To go forth sharing the love of Christ with Athens & the World

  • Award Grants to local organizations
  • Advocacy for peace and justice
  • Fundraising-Benevolence Market, International Craft Fair
  • Hospitality events such as AthHalf Marathon, Athens Parade of Lights, Criterion Bike Race
  • Local mission projects
  • Mission Trips-Domestic/International
  • PCUSA mission support
  • Monthly Food Sundays
  • Ongoing Service to Community (IHN, Our Daily Bread, Project Safe)
  • Schedule of Special Offerings
  • Weekday School Oversight

Congregational Care Commission (Encompassing the ministry of Congregational Care):

Mission Statement: To nurture, care, and respond to the needs of our congregation

  • Church Receptions for Funerals/Memorial services
  • Flower and Card Ministry
  • Health & Wellness Ministry
  • Lay Callers
  • Presbyterian Women— (Circle groups and elects own officers, etc.)
  • Prayer Chain
  • Response Teams—death, crisis for members
  • Senior Adult Ministry (SAM)
  • Stephen Ministry

Fellowship and Evangelism Commission (Encompassing the ministry of Fellowship & Evangelism):

Mission Statement: The Fellowship and Evangelism Commission provides growth opportunities for our members to connect and build relationships with one another outside of the regular Church and Sunday School time. The Commission also welcomes guests to our church, invites them to become a part of our family, encourages new members, and communicates about the life of the church with the larger community.
