Dear Friends,

It is with great joy and thanksgiving that I inform you that yesterday, January 6, 2019, the congregation voted unanimously to endorse the Pastor Nominating Committee’s recommendation that terms of call be extended to the Rev. Dr. Ryan Baer to be the next Senior Pastor/Head of Staff of First Presbyterian Church of Athens.

Ryan received his Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in 2007 and his Doctor of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary in 2018. From 2008 to 2012 he was the Pastor and Head of Staff of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in West Palm Beach, Florida, and since 2012 he has served as the Pastor and Head of Staff of Ridglea Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

Throughout our interactions with Ryan, we have been impressed with his warmth, generosity and humor, his ability to connect and communicate with others, and his deep understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In the words of the Reverend Rindy Trouteaud, Co-Moderator of the Northeast Georgia Presbytery Committee on Ministry, Ryan is “one of the most promising up-and-coming leaders in the Church; someone whose future only God can imagine!”

More detailed information about Ryan and his family can be found on the church website and in brochures available in the church office, Narthex, and Atrium.

Ryan’s first day in the office will be February 11, 2019, and he will preach his first sermon on February 17, with a reception to follow the 11:00 a.m. service. Ryan, his wife, Amy, and their three sons, Nathan, Daniel, and Joshua, are excited about coming to Athens, and we know you will want to be in church Sunday, February 17, to welcome the Baers into our church family.

On behalf of the Pastor Nominating Committee, I want to express our heartfelt thanks to you for having entrusted us with the profound and humbling responsibility of seeking a new pastor for our church. We have sought to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit throughout our deliberations, and at every step of our journey we have felt the presence of your prayers. We feel confident that God has called Ryan to shepherd our congregation and that under his leadership we are entering a new era of continuing growth in the spiritual life of our church.

Yours in Christ,

Lewis Hudgins
Chair, Pastor Nominating Committee
