Welcome to First Presbyterian Church. We are a congregation of people who are responding to God’s grace in our life. We do this through creating community where we can together seek truth, ask questions, and encourage and care for one another. We also respond to God’s grace by worshiping together regularly. In worship we experience forgiveness, inspiration, gratitude, and challenge as we encounter God in Word and Sacrament. Last, but not least, we respond to God’s grace by loving and serving those in our community and beyond in the name of Jesus Christ.
Our church has just over nine hundred members. Founded in 1820 by Moses Waddel, who was at the time the president of what became the University of Georgia, we have been a vital part of Athens for nearly 200 years. Our members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have a wide variety of talents and interests. We are an open church and welcome all comers. There is a place for everyone here.
We hope you will visit us on Sunday morning or at any of our many other fellowship, educational, or service activities.
For information about visiting on Sunday morning, please see Guest Information. Periodically we offer a New Member Class for those wishing to consider membership. We would welcome your participation. Our next New Member Class is March 24 and March 31, with new members being introduced to the congregation on Sunday, April 7. For more information, please contact Lucy Bell Johnson.
